Hey guys, I’m going to be the new organizer for TalVeg. I’m a first year PhD student in the biochemistry program here at FSU. I met my wife Sarah at FSU while working on my bachelors/masters. I’ve been a vegetarian for 5 years and have two wonderful doggies who are doubling as children for the time being.
I’ve got a few things planned for our group. Don’t worry, no big changes are coming and our dinner socials will go on as they always have. However, there are a ton of vegetarian and vegan friendly restaurants in the Tallahassee limits, and I believe we are comitting a crime against our stomachs if we don’t branch out and try some of them. In addition to our monthly get-togethers at Daru’s, we will start adding additional dinner socials to the calendar. I’m planning on scheduling them so that there will be at least two weeks in between any of our events. New Leaf has an amazing vegetarian/vegan brunch on Sundays, so this will be a good option for us as well.
I’ve been tossing the idea around for us to have the occasional themed potluck instead of a dinner at a restaurant. Some examples include a vegan potluck, a Asian/Caribbean/Indian/etc potluck, a bring-a-carnivore potluck (bring a friend or spouse!), and so on. My wife and I just got a quaint house in town and wouldn’t mind hosting a few of these.
I am very interested in spreading the word about vegetarianism and getting new faces to come to our socials. I am going to create a sister vegetarian club/society at FSU. Being a registered student organization gives us exposure and gets us access to meeting spaces, bulletin boards, and funding among other things. This group will promote the health and environmental benefits of vegetarianism. I ran the FSU Chess Club for a year (nerd alert), so I have a little experience at managing small organizations. Participation with our FSU branch will be completely optional.
TalVeg (and our soon-to-be created FSU branch) will always be a friendly social group (read: peaceful and non confrontational). Picketing and animal rights demonstrations will not be a part of our agenda as there are groups out there that do this already. No dues will ever be required.
I will be out of town until the end of the summer. Normal monthly meetings at Daru’s will continue to be posted on Facebook/Yahoo/here/etc until August, and I will start adding some new dinners/events mentioned above to the calendar sometime during the beginning of August when I am back in town.
I think that covers just about everything. Please email me or message me on Facebook if you have any questions.

PS: We have a new website: http://talveg.wordpress.com . One of the old organizers still owns talveg.com and I can’t get in contact with him. I am going to register talveg.net so that it redirects to the above site sometime soon.
